Cruisers

As you would have seen we have a very active dinghy section at the Locks but we also cater for cruiser sailor. A lot of us made our way up through the ranks of smaller boats like the silhouettes and eventides, being boats which are well used to our drying mud moorings. We have about 30 of these moorings in the lake, which is either side of the channel as you approach Southsea marina. They are fairly priced and if your boat is less than 23 foot it is half price of the others.

Let me describe some of the other things, which bolt onto membership of the club. The parking is on a road outside of the club, which has the air of a private road as a bit further on from the club it terminates so it is very quite, and safe to leave your car. The club runs a dinghy pool and for £15 per year you book out one of the club dinghies to row out to your boat. They are stored in a purpose built rack and regularly maintained by the club. The launching trolleys are proper 3 wheeled affairs, which are designed for the job. In the changing rooms you can hire a small locker for rollocks and wellies etc. The showers are top notches they have to be as the dinghies race in the winter. The bar is open various times of the week and bitter is very cheap. The slip way down from the club is usable at all states of the tide and we have a couple of stout tall posts on a concrete scrubbing off grid with a hose which stretches down that far.

The moorings are mainly all on soft mud giving about 3hrs either side of a high tide, this soft mud tends to stop people walking out to the boats and ransacking them like they do over at Emsworth. Also the mud tends to caress the keels of the boat as it settles out to dry out when the tide goes out. If you take a mooring on you will expected to put your own tackle on it but other members can assist to help you get it done.  The nearby marina has lots of services available that are expected of a modern marina, we also have a discount scheme with our local chandler up the road.

The cruisers usually go away for weekend on an adhoc basis usually meeting up the bar Fri night to plan where we go for the weekend. Some of go further a field over to France or the West Country whilst there are some of us who sail midweek and through the winter. Don’t forget that from leaving our moorings you can be at sea in the Solent within 15mins (with the tide of course) and that there is not a nasty bar at the entrance unlike Chichester. Also when you are paid up with the sticker from the Harbour master of Langstone which is included in the mooring fees you are allowed reciprocal visiting to Chichester i.e. no anchoring fees at East Head in Chichester harbour.
